  • Mileage and local transportation for appointments

Common questions

Is gestational carrier compensation taxable in the US?

Tax treatment of surrogate compensation in the US is nuanced and varies by state. Many carriers treat base compensation as taxable income, while reimbursed expenses are generally not taxable. We strongly recommend speaking with a tax professional familiar with surrogacy. Camica can refer you to advisors with experience in this area.

When and how are payments made?

Base compensation is paid monthly once the heartbeat is confirmed. Out-of-pocket and travel expenses are reimbursed as they occur. All payments flow through an escrow account managed independently — you're never waiting on intended parents directly.

Does experience level affect my compensation?

Yes — experienced carriers who have completed a previous surrogacy journey receive higher base compensation, reflecting the proven track record and reduced unknowns for the intended parents.

What does childcare coverage look like?

Childcare for your own children during appointments, procedures, and recovery is covered as part of your base monthly compensation. If doctor-ordered bed rest requires extended childcare beyond the norm, that's addressed through your bed rest allowance. We make sure you and your family are supported throughout.
